Carbon dioxide is responsible for about half the total green house effect. Reducing CO2 production will
require the development and use of alternative fuels such as hydrogen rather than fossil fuels.
In order to meet the global energy demand, new large-scale potential uses of non-fossil primary
energy forms are in preparation. Over the next few decades, the consumption of fossil energy
resources is expected to peak and a large part of the additional energy required will be covered by
renewable energies.
When the hydrogen burns in the gasoline engine, practically none of the pollutants and CO2 occur,
except for NO2 from the air, but water in vapor form, which can return to circulation.
The transition to hydrogen fuel changes the design requirement for an IC engine. For the gasoline
engine, the mixture preparation and combustion control had to be redeveloped.
The engine can have its combustion space thermally controlled, with no hot-spots, and that makes it
suitable to run on hydrogen.
Complete thermal control of the combustion environment is important to the efficient operation of the
engine. It is necessary to control the surface temperature of the piston, as well as the surfaces with
which air or air / fuel contacts when it enters the working chamber of the engine.
Thermal control of the piston was achieved by using the center of the central shaft to access the
piston for internal water cooling. This design allows to run water into the piston itself and back on the
other side through the connection.
The water cooled piston overcomes the three mechanical disadvantages of the conventional sliding
piston: weak restraint and control over the movement of the piston, high demand for lubrication of
pistons, poor thermal regulation of the piston.
These shortcomings can be overcome by controlling the movement of the piston with a central
bearing and in this way eliminating the need to lean on the cylinder walls to conduct the piston. This led
to the creation of a mechanism with a low coefficient of friction, which requires lubrication only for the
compression sealing components.
It is an important decision to invest research and development resources in plans that are able to
meet the target requirements. Research can be relatively inexpensive, and the result may be better
than expected now.
